I forgot that today is an insanely busy day…

So here’s one of my favorite posts from earlier this year for your Thursday reading pleasure.

This is the Every48 equivalent of a BTN workout, by the way – some days, you realize too late that everything is kind of nuts, so you’ve just got to “get it done” however you can. So I decided to go back to the post that started it all – my take on how to get your workout done when you have far fewer minutes in a day than you planned to have. Appropriate that the U.S.-Germany World Cup match starts in a couple of hours (as I’m writing this post), and the original BTN Workout post happened because of the NFC Championship Game (or as Richard Sherman called it, the real Super Bowl).

The BTN Workout

There is a secret workout that gets me out the door every time, no matter if I’m exhausted, worn out, frustrated, or underslept. It’s called the BTN workout.

BTN = Better Than Nothing

Yesterday I was completely not interested in running 12 miles, which was in my workout plan for the 2014 Boston Marathon. I was simply not interested. I was very interested in the NFC Championship game which was to be held at 3:30 p.m. Pacific time. And I was, in no particular order: cranky, tired, not well rested, antsy for the game (I love love love sports anyway – see here for proof), and really interested in lounging in my PJ’s, hanging out with my husband and reading the Sunday New York Times, which is the best eight bucks I spend on reading material all week.

But I knew that skipping my run was not an option. So, on days like this, provided they’re not too frequent, I give myself an out. Go outside in weather-appropriate attire (it was 40 degrees yesterday morning in Seattle), and run for a minimum of six miles, and you’re done. (My BTN distance during non-marathon season is four miles.)

That’s a manageable yet slightly challenging distance, and I went kicking and screaming the whole way, and got it done. So there. And it was mighty fun to come home, post it to my social media accounts, and then see all of my runner friends who had done more or less the same thing: figured out how to fit in their workouts so that they actually got ’em done.

(And just a quick note that when I find those BTN days are too frequent, that’s usually a sign that I’m overtraining and need to revise my workout plan. Important to pay attention to, especially if you’re getting started on a new plan or coming back to regular workouts after some time off.)
